FALKLANDS 25th ANNIVERSARY

Saturday 27th October 2007. We joined Lord Lieutenant Michael Brinton, Admiral Lord West and over 1000 people including Falklands' veterans from across the country.  Members of the Royal British Legion and cadets from all the services.  Led by the band of HM Royal Marines, we marched through Worcester city centre to the applause of a record crowd, in remembrance of the Falklands war.

CLEANING THE WAR MEMORIAL

The squadron was asked if it would provide a team of volunteers to clean up the War Memorial in Albrighton that was "somewhat" overgrown prior to the annual Remembrance Sunday parade.

FG Off Burgess arranged that on Saturday 3rd November a small team of volunteers would meet at 2.00pm to begin work.  However, Fg Off Curd decided to conduct an early initial reconnaissance of the site and a daunting job seemed in prospect. Members of the squardron Civilian committee had been to the memorial and done a very thorough pruning job, something that hadn't been done for some while judging by the amount of vegetation that needing moving.

Fg Off Curd phoned his partner in crime Fg Off Burgess who came over early and in turn he contacted Flt Sgt McKeon and Cpl Vincent.  So the small team consisting of Fg Off Burgess, Fg Off Curd, and the cadets ably assisted by Mrs Curd and Kearan their son began work.  Cadet Neadle and his sister also arrived and helped.  All in all after nearly two hours work, thirty one bags of branches, leaves and litter had been collected with only a few cuts, some thorn damage and not too many swear words being uttered.

The memorial looked fatastic and tidy so much so that the secretary of the local British Legion who drove past, turned round and stopped to compliment us on our good work.  Even the Boss who arrived when all the work had been done (Good timing?  You decide!), said how well it all looked.

A very satisfying and useful job was completed for the local community, and all that was required was to pop over the following week to collect a few leaves which dared to fall off the trees onto the memorial.

The squadron has volunteered to keep the memorial tidy for the community in the future.

Thanks once again to all the people who helped.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2007

On Sunday 11th November the Squadron took part in the annual Armistice Day Parade in Albrighton.  Thirty five cadets and nine members of staff turned up on the day despite the rather suspect weather and for the first time in my knowledge (and that stretches back over a number of years!) the squadron was able to parade both the Band and a separate flight of cadets.

The Band followed by a Detachment from DCAE Cosford and the British Royal Legion veterans led off the parade.  Groups and representatives from the local community and youth organisations completed the parade.

After a short Service of Remembrance at the War memorial in Albrighton that was looking very tidy, the wreath laying ceremony, the parade moved onto St. Mary's Church for the rest of the service.

Following the service the parade marched to the Royal British Legion Headquaters for liquid refreshment and something to eat, actually just an excuse to get warm!!

All cadets looked very smart and the standard of drill was very good, the Flight Sergeant in charge of the parade and the RAF detachment commented on how well the cadets looked and marched.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the cadets who attended what was a very good and important parade.

  DINING IN NIGHT

16th November 2007

The highlight of the Squadron's social calendar took place on the 16th November with the Annual Dining in Night being held one again at Haughton Hall near Shifnal.

The great and the good of the Squadron arrived dressed to the nines with the female members looking especially attractive with glamorous dresses.  Not to be out done the male squadron members looked very dapper in their bow ties.

Once again the guest of honour was Air Commodore Neil Gammon the Commandant of DCAE Cosford, who had returned from London especially for the meal!

After a short speech from the Boss, the Air Commodore was invited to say a few words and he made a very nice speech in support of the squadron and its activities.  For some the highlight of the evening was the promotion of some cadets.

Cadet Langton showed himself to be star of the one liners telling jokes after the guests at the top table had adjourned to the bar, in fact he got far more laughs than the Boss!!

All in all it was a very enjoyable night and I for one look forward to the Dining in Night next year.
